In the census of 31 March 1901 in Ipswich Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk, he was listed as a Carpenter, aged 18 born in Haverhill, a Boarder of Arthur Bird and his family.⁵ Arthur emigrated to Canada 1903. He was a Carpenter and built many of the buildings in the local homesteads, including Aubrey's house.
He joined the Army in 1915. They farmed until 1928 when they returned to England. He had poor health due to being gassed in World War I.^2,6
