John worked for the Midland Railway in Bradford, entering service in 1898. He was a Lamp Porter. On 17 July 1908, he was involved in an accident and cut his bottom lip.10,6 The incident Report showed:
Pask was endeavouring to move a loaded barrow when he slipped on some grease on the floor and fell with his lip against the edge of the barrow sustaning a nasty cut. He had to go off duty and it will probably be a few days before he is able to return.
He resumed work on 29 July.10,6

Research Note: Confusion over his name, and age, is probably due to his parents dying when he was 14. He then moved around a lot before settling down in the late 1880s in Bradford, Yorkshire.15
