#7522, b. 1880
Last Edited=29 Sep 2012
Gertrude Alice BARNES was born in 1880 in Burnham Norton, Norfolk. Her parents were Isaac & Jane Maria BARNES née STARLING.1,2,3,4,5,6
In approximately 1898, Gertrude met her long-term partner Robert PASS, son of William PASS and MARY VICKERS. Robert met Gertrude through his sister, who was in service with her, and she made the arrangments for them to have there first date in 1897.1,7 She was the informant of the registration of the birth of her daughter Maria Gertrude PASS who was born on 31 August 1899 at Kelby, Lincolnshire.2,8,9,6
In the census of 31 March 1901 in East End, Great Ringstead, Norfolk, she was listed as aged 21 born in Burnham Norton, the daughter of John NOBES and his wife Jane M. NOBES [her mother and stepfather], together with her husband Robert, and their children Marie G., and Maud L.2,1

During the next few years their name changed from PASS to PASK. This was probably due to the children starting school and learning to write their name.10 Gertrude was the informant of the registration of the birth of her daughter Florence Eveline Pask BARNES who was born on 15 November 1905 at Weasenham, Norfolk. Although Florence was born in November, she was not registered until 12 April 1906.11,12,13,6
In the census of 2 April 1911 in Little Witchingham, Norfolk, Gertrude was listed as aged 31, born in Burnham Norton, married 13 years with 8 children 7 living 1 dead, the wife of Robert PASK (He was a Teaman on the Farm, living with his wife Gertrude, and children Maria, Maud Lilian, Mary Alice, Robert, Florence, Ethel, and Gladys May. Also listed was his mother [mother-in-law] Jane NOBES.)6
During the war years (1939-46), together with their daughter Sylvia, they moved to Scarborough.3
Her husband, Robert, died in 1946 in the Scarborough registration district.14 However when her daughter Sylvia moved back to Wisbech after her husband was demobbed, Gertrude also moved back to Wisbech where she became a housekeeper to a gentleman who lived in Elm High Road, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.3
Gertrude married Garner WALLIS in 1951 in the King's Lynn registration district.15,16

Research Note: Gertrude & Robert are believed to have had 13 children. This is verified in the 1911 census, as Gertrude is listed as having had 8 children, including one who had died.1
