John Harold Fred PARKER1

Last Edited=13 Mar 2021
John Harold Fred PARKER was born on 4 March 1938, in the Bridgwater registration district.1,2 He was the son of William Harold Bright PARKER and Annie Maud Evelyn DOWELL.1
On 29 September 1939, in the 1939 National Register, John was living with his mother at 3 Silver Street, Bridgwater, Somerset. His date of birth was, incorrectly, given as 4 March 1937.2
On 2 August 1949, John, and his sister Valerie, went missing from their home in Union Street, Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire.3
An annoucement regarding "Search for Children" was detailed in the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette on 5 August 1949.3 It read:
Search for Children
Police throughout England were still searching to-day for two children, John (11), and Valerie Parker (10), who have been missing from their home in Union Street, Dalton-in-Furness, since Tuesday. They left with their mongrel dog Peter, which returned home late on Tuesday night. Lancashire police believe that the children may be trying to reach their mother in Southampton.3

An annoucement regarding "Missing Girl's Body Found" was detailed in the Nottingham Journal, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, on 8 August 1949.4 It read:
MISSING GIRL'S BODY FOUND
The body of ten-year-old Valerie Parker, of Union-street. Dalton-in-Furness Lancashire), who had been missing from her home since Tuesday, was found late on Saturday night in Walney Channel about two miles north of Barrow-in-Furness.
Valerie left with her brother John (11) and dog, Peter, but the dog returned alone and a wide-spread police search began.
On Saturdav afternoon two Dalton boys, who went to look at the wreck of a coaster off the northern end of Walnev Island found the girl's body. There was no sign of her brother.4

John died on 12 August 1949, at the age of 11, and his death was registered in the Barrow-in-Furness registration district.5
An annoucement regarding "Boy's body on shore" was detailed in the Bradford Observer, Bradford, Yorkshire, on 13 August 1949.6 It read:
Boy's body on shore
A body washed ashore near the lighthouse at the southern end of Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness was identified last night as that of John Parker (11) of Union-street, Dalton-in-Furness, whose sister's body was found by two bathers last Saturday at the north of the island.
John and Valerie (10) disappeared on 2 August having left home to play. After a police search at Dalton there was a further search in the area where the little girl's body was found.
The father went to Barrow and established identity of the dead boy.6

The inquest into his and his sister's death was reported in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer on 23 August 1949.7 It read:
Drowned children had been paddling -- Inquest theory
A verdict of "Found drowned" was returned at the resumed inquest at Ulverston-in-Furness yesterday on the two Dalton-in-Furness children. Valerie Parker, aged 10, and her 11-year-old brother, John, whose bodies were recovered from the sea after they had been missing for several days.
Stating that post-mortem examination showed death in each case to be due to drowning, the Coroner, Mr. J. Poole, said the fact that both children were fully dressed apart from their shoes and stockings, suggested that while paddling in the sea they got into difficulties and were drowned.
He said every credit was due to the county police for the thorough manner in which they went into the disappearance of the children, and the extensive searches they made.7
