James married Harriet MADLEY on 26 December 1881 in Trelleck, Monmouthshire.6,7
An annoucement regarding his arrest was detailed in The Western Mail, Monmouth, Monmouthshire, on 3 January 1888.8,9 It read:
At Monmouth Police-court yesterday, James Pask, a labourer, was committed for trial at the assizes, charged with the manslaughter of William Parker, a woodman, of Trelleck Grange, whose death resulted from injuries received in a fight with defendant.8,9
A more detailed report was available in the South Wales Echo dated 3 January 1888, it read:
THE TRELLECK MANSLAUGHTER
At Monmouth county police-court on Monday — before Mr George Griffin Griffin (in the chair), Lieut.-Colonel Davies, and Colonel Walwyn — James Pask, labourer, Trelleck Grange, was charged on remand with killing and slaying Wm. Parker, woodcutter, of the same place, at the parish of Trelleck, on Tuesday, the 27th December. — Capt. Berthon, deputy chief-constable, conducted the prosecution, and Mr Evans, solicitor, of Chepstow, appeared for the accused.—Several witnesses were called for the prosecution. Their evidence went to show thatf at the Fountain Inn, Trelleck, on the day in question, the deceased began quarrelling with a man named Morgan. Out of this sprang a further dispute between Parker and Pask, who ultimataly went out on the road to fight. Both men stood up in attitude, and the prisoner knocked deceased down. The latter fell, and his head came violently in contact with the ground. He tried to get up, and when he got on his knees, Pask, it was stated, struck him a terrific blow on the temple. Deceased fell down, and never spoke or moved afterwards. Pask called out to the persons who were looking on, "Oh, dear, come here. Let us pick him up, for I believe I have killed him." Pask and some others then carried deceased into the Fountain. Dr Jones, Tintern, was sent for, and he arrived just before Parker died. — Dr Jones deposed that death was caused by concussion of the brain and fracture of the skull. He added that all the people he saw at the Fountain on the occasion were drunk.— Witnesses were called for the defence to show that the deceased had been the aggressor, that the fight had been a fair one, and that no unfair blow had been struck by Pask, as had been stated by witnesses for the prosecution.— Prisoner, when questioned, said it was a fair fight, and he had no idea of killing Parker. He was very sorry it had ended so. —Prisoner was committed to the assizes. Bail was refused. The deceased man was buried at Trelleck on Sunday. His funeral was largely attended.10

In the census of 5 April 1891 in Bolanybay, Trelleck, Monmouthshire, James was listed as aged 31 born in Trelleck, the Head of Household; a Labourer & Woodman, living with his wife Harriet, daughter Emily, and two sons, Edwin and John. Also living with them was James' father and mother.11
As of 1892, James lived at Winslow House, Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire.12 It read:
A DESPERATE CHARACTER. BRUTAL ASSAULT AT MONMOUTH.
At Monmouth County Police-court on Saturday (before Mr. G. Griffin, in the chair; Colonel J. Davies, and the Rev. L. A. Rees) James Pask, a powerful-looking man, with a bad record, which included the manslaughter of William Parker, at Trelleck, in 1888, was convicted of assaulting two young men, named Andrew Brown and Frank Watkins, on October 28. — Mr. Herbert Williams for the defence, admitted the assault, and pleaded provocation. — F. Watkins, one of the prosecutors, said that defendant with one blow sent him eight or nine yards down the road knocking him insensible. — Defendant pleaded hard for mercy, and dropped on his knees before the bench pouring forth a profusion of promises of amendment. — The bench decided to give defendant one more chance, and fined 40s. and 20s. expenses.8,13

On 11 November 1893, James was again convicted of assault. The Western Mail reported it on 13 Nov 1893.8,13
In the census of 31 March 1901 in Whitelye, Trelleck, Monmouthshire, James was listed as aged 41 born in Trelleck, the Head of Household; a Cattle & Pig Dealer living with his wife James, his mother Deborah, and children Emily, Edwin, and John.7
