John PASK1,2

#4635, b. 3 February 1874, d. 1954
Last Edited=14 Jan 2017
John PASK was born on 3 February 1874 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.1,2,3 He was the son of John PASK and Sarah Ann CLEMENTS.1
In the census of 3 April 1881 in 40 Overstone Road, Hammersmith, London, he was listed as aged 7 born in Southend, the son of John PASK.4

John was good at cricket and even better at football. He joined the sports club at St Clement's Church in Fulham Palace Road, where the curate Henry Cumberlege was related by marriage to Harry Patterson, the Kent and England cricketer. Patterson coached the church's young players.

In October 1890 John participated in St Clement's FC's 15-0 humbling of another church team St John's. St Clement's scored 52 goals in the first five matches but then complacency crept in and only eight players turned up for a cup match. They scraped through but in the next round were hammered 9-0 by the Stanley, one of the best teams in Fulham.5,6

In the census of 5 April 1891 in 1 Dawson Street, Fulham, London, he was listed as a Railway Ticket Porter, aged 17 born in Southend, the son of John PASK.1

On Christmas Day 1897, Fulham Football club fielded four debutants including another Stanley favourite John Pask. The frantic team-building seemed justified, for results were good and goals plentiful. Harrow Athletic, visiting the Cottage for a London League match on the 15th January 1898, found themselves 8-0 down at half-time. Despite easing off in the second half Fulham won 13-0. True, Harrow played throughout with nine men but it shows how the riverside club was going all out to entertain the paying customers. There was no manager but plenty of strategic thinking. Before important matches star players were rested - and even a reserve game cancelled.

Fulham notched 101 goals that season, around half of them scored by centre forward Freeman. Lots of the newcomers dropped out after a match or two but John Pask kept his place. He did not score often, but he provided plenty of opportunities for others.5,6

John married Mary Elizabeth ATWELL, daughter of Mary E. ATWELL, in 1898 in the Fulham registration district.7

On 3 June 1900, at the time of the baptism of their son George William PASK, John and Mary lived at 181 Greyhound Road, Fulham, London. John was a Labourer.8

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 181 Greyhound Road, Fulham, London, John was listed as the Head of Household; a Carpenter's Mate, living with his wife Mary, and sons George W., and John R.9

On 7 December 1903, at the time of the baptism of their daughter Elsie Beatrice PASK, John and Mary lived in 181 Greyhound Road, Fulham, London. John was a Painter.10

After leaving Fulham FC John played alongside his brother Albert for Old St Alban’s FC. Sadly Albert, a railway carriage examiner, died at the age of 27 in a dreadful accident at Whitechapel Station. A thousand people attended his funeral where his father and Albert's three surviving brothers Clement, William and John were the chief mourners and Albert Maile was among the pall bearers.6

In the census of 2 April 1911 in 5 Hartopp Avenue, Fulham, London, John was listed as aged 37 born in Southend Essex, the Head of Household; a Signal Painter with the District Railway, living with his wife Mary E., and children Lilian R., George W., John R., Leonard, and Albert.11

His wife, Mary, died in 1930 in the Fulham registration district.12
John married Emily Beatrice LISSAMER in 1933 in the Fulham registration district.13
On 29 September 1939, in the 1939 National Register, John and his wife Beatrice, were listed as living in 28 Bridge Road, Isleworth, Middlesex. He was born on 3 February 1874, and his occupation was a Painter. Also listed was Joseph J. WALSH, and John O'CONNOR.3
John died in 1954 in the Rochford registration district.14
His wife's, Emily, death was registered in 1968 in the Rochford registration district.15
