Jane Annie CHESTER1

#11813, b. 4 May 1877, d. 4 February 1963
Last Edited=18 May 2016
Jane Annie Pask née Chester
(1878-1966)
Jane Annie was also known as Jane WATSON.2,3 Jane Annie was possibly also known as Jane Ann FEETHAM.4
Jane WATSON was born on 4 May 1877 in Lamesley, Northumberland. She was the daughter of William White CHESTER, and Elizabeth WATSON. Her parents never married - her father died in 1879.5,6,7,8,2,9,10,3
Jane married Walter PASK, son of Henry PASK and Mary Ann RUDDOCK, on 21 May 1898 in The Register Office, Gateshead, County Durham. She was a Spinster aged 20 years, residing at 44 Askew Road, Gateshead. Her father was listed as William White Chester (deceased), an Engine Driver. The marriage was witnessed by Frank FEETHAM (bride's step-father), and Mary Jane REAY.1,11,12,6
Jane was the informant of the registration of the birth of her son Arthur PASK who was born on 1 August 1905 at 98 Dixon Street, Gateshead, County Durham.12,13,14
On 29 December 1906, at the time of the birth of their son, Jane and Walter lived at 42 Greenhow Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Walter was a General Labourer. He registered the birth on 18 January 1907.15
Jane was the informant of the registration of the birth of her son George PASK who was born on 18 February 1908 at 9 Seymour Street, Gateshead, County Durham.16,17
Her husband, Walter, died on 20 July 1908 in St. George's Hospital, St. George Hanover Square, London, at the age of 32. He was killed in a railway accident. An inquest held on July 21, found that he was knocked down by a train, and died of a fracture of the skull. The verdict was accidental death.12,18,5,19
With the untimely death of husband Walter, she was left with 4 children, the youngest George being only a few months old. With no means of support Jane gave the 2 middle boys, Arthur and Walter, to her mother-in-law Mary Ann. She kept Laura the eldest and the baby George. Her mother-in-law emigrated to Melbourne Australia on the "Wilcannia" departing from London on 18 September 1912, taking with her Arthur and Walter. Jane Ann wrote to her mother-in-law Mary Ann begging for Arthur and Walter to be returned to her as she was getting married again and her circumstances were much better. Evidently she was horrified that they were going to Australia and was allowed to see them only a few days before they left.12
Jane married William Benjamin James CAMIS on 22 January 1910 in The Register Office, Wandsworth, London. She was a Railway Carriage Cleaner aged 30 years, a Widow residing at 39 Stanley Street Battersea. Her father was listed as William Chester (deceased), an Engine Driver (Railway). The marriage was witnessed by Elizabeth CAMIS, and William CAMIS.20,21,22

An Interlocking Signal Fitter (a Railway Signaller), living with his wife Jane. Also listed at the same address, although separately enumerated was his parents William & Elizabeth CAMIS, and sister Elizabeth. Her four children from her previous marriage to Walter PASK were not listed.7
Her husband, William, died in 1927 in the Wandsworth registration district.23
Jane witnessed the marriage of Louisa Emily RIDGWAY and her youngest son George PASK on 2 February 1938 in The Register Office, Wandsworth, London.24,25
On 29 September 1939, in the 1939 National Register, Jane was listed as Widowed living in the BARNES Household at 92 Aslett Street, Wandsworth, London. She was born on 4 May 1875, or 1876, and her occupation was Unemployed Daily Housework.26
In 1947, Jane lived at 10 Melville Cottages, Shepperton Green, Shepperton, Middlesex.27
Jane died on 4 February 1963, at the age of 85, and her death was registered in the Hendon registration district.5,28,3

Several photographs of Jane are included in an electronic photograph album titled Yvonne Sumner Album .29

Research Note: Yvonne writes: "Uncle George believed that my grandmother, Jane Annie Pask had a brother - Christopher Feetham(?) who won the George Cross 1972(?) for an act of bravery in 1919 - 'Bravery in a burning steamer, S.S. Hornsey. Fireman's courageous act.' On Chris Feetham death the George Cross was auctioned and bought for a collection in Canada! Chris died in 1976. He originally was awarded the 'Albert Medal' it was later recalled and was replaced by the George Cross.27,30"
