In the mother's certificate it states Boars Head Yard. Long Alley and Boars Head Yard are quite close, Long Alley was renamed Appold Street and Boars Head Yard was at the southern end of Petticoat Lane near Aldgate High Street. It is likely that it was Boars Head Yard. In the 1841 Census [Ref. HO107, Piece 717, Book 8, Folio 29, page 25] this was the home of his grandmother Margaret.10,20,5,6

Mary BARKER1

#2084, b. 1821
Last Edited=19 Oct 2007
Her married name was Mary ASHPOLE.2
Mary BARKER was born in 1821 in Yorkshire.2,1
Mary married in 1871 in the Shoreditch registration district.3,4

Research Note: Roger writes: "She was Alfred Ashpole's third wife (of four) and it's quite clear that wives three and four were both alive at the same time. So my guess is that Alfred took up with the future wife number four and Mary left him and went to live with her daughter and son-in-law.4 "

She was listed as a Domestic Servant, aged 60 born in Yorkshire, the Boarder of John PASK in the census of 3 April 1881 in 15 Sceptre Street, Mile End, London. However she was in fact his mother-in-law.5,2 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 1 Ruskin Road, Tottenham, Middlesex, she was listed as a widow, the mother of Mary PASK.6

Research Note: Roger Harvey [Source #359] is a registered member of the Guild of One Name Studies - Member 4178. Contact Roger for more information on the ASHPOLE / ASHPOOL and ASHPOOLE One-Name Study.4

Research Note: In the 1871 Census for 3 Turners Place, St Leonard's Shoreditch (Ref. RG10, Piece 448, Folio 23, page 6 and Folio 24, page 7) Mary Lee aged 52 and family including Walter aged 14, Isabella aged 10, (but no Robert) and Alfred Ashpole aged 38 and family are living at the same address. An Alfred Ashpole was christened on 31 May 1833 at St Botolph, Bishopsgate the son of John and Catharine Ashpol. In the 1861 Census Mary Lee and family (indexed as See) were living at 3 Joiners Place, St Leonard's, Shoreditch (Ref. RG9/235, Folio 77, page 33), although no daughter Mary.
A possible record for the 1841 Census for Mary Lee is HO107, Piece 1485, Folio 199, page 60, although I'm not sure of this as is was in St James Westminster. Morton Lee's Death was recorded in Sep 1858 at Pancras, Vol. 1b, page 28 and Morton Lee married Mary Foster (from Yorkshire) in Sep 1846 at Lambeth, Volume 1V, page 348.7
