John Paske

     John PASKE was born in 1805 in Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.1,3,4,5 He was the son of Charles PASKE and Esther EDWARDS.6 He was baptised on 11 August 1805 in Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.7,6,8,9
He was named as a beneficiary in his father's, Charles PASKE, will dated 18 December 1822.10
His father's, Charles PASKE, estate was probated to him on 23 April 1833 at Llandaff, Glamorganshire.10
John married Eliza CURZON on 29 March 1834 in Dingestow, Monmouthshire. He was a Bachelor, otp of Dingestow. The marriage was witnessed by James & Ann JONES.1,11,12,13,14
In 1835, at the time of the death of their son Charles, John and Eliza lived at Talavan Farm, Dingestow, Monmouthshire.15
In the census of 7 June 1841 in Wherngochen, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 50, the Head of Household a Farmer, assumed to be living with his wife Eliza and children Elizabeth, Sarah, and John. Also living with them were seven servants.11 John's name was included in the Bond/Inventory of his brother-in-law's, Thomas PRICHARD, probated on 20 October 1841 in Usk, Monmouthshire.16
In the census of 30 March 1851 in Werngocher, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 45 born in Cwmcarvan, the Head of Household a Farmer of 290 acres employing 4 labourers, living with his wife Eliza, and six children Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, Wm [William], Eliza, and Margaret. Also living with them were five servants.17
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 56 born in Monmouthshire, the Head of Household a Farmer of 290 acres employing 4 men, living with his wife Eliza and nine children Elizabeth, John, Ann, William, Eliza, Margaret, Thomas, Amos, and Jane. Also living with them were four servants. Their daughter Ellen is crossed out.12
In the 1861 census, his nephews Walter Charles BLOWER and Thomas Silvester BLOWER lived at his previous farm - Talavan Farm, Dingestow, Monmouthshire.18
He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth PASKE and John FARR on 30 May 1864 in St. Teilo's Church, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire.19,20
His wife, Eliza, died on 7 March 1865 in Werngochen Farm, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.21,22,23,24
In the census of 2 April 1871 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 65 born in Cwmcarvan, the Head of Household a Farmer, a Widower living with his children Margaret, Thomas, Jane M., and Ellen. Also listed was John P. FARR, a 2-year old visitor [his grandson], and three servants.3
John PASKE witnessed the marriage of Thomas Silvester BLOWER and his daughter Eliza PASKE on 25 May 1871 in St. Dingat's Church, Dingestow, Monmouthshire.25,26,27
John was in an undated photograph.28
In the census of 3 April 1881 in Rock House, Llandenny, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 75 born in Cwmcarvon [Cwmcarvan], the Head of Household; a Retired Farmer, a Widower, living with his unmarried daughters Annie, and Helen, and grandchildren Eliza Ann FARR, Thos Paske BLOWER, and Albert Walter BLOWER. Also listed were two servants.4
John died on 9 November 1881 at The Rock, Llandenny, Monmouthshire.7,1,29,30,8,31 He was buried on 12 November 1881 in St. Teilo's Church, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire.7,1,24,32,23

Eliza CURSONS was born in 1814 in Oldcastle, Monmouthshire. She was the daughter of Nathaniel & Elizabeth CURZON.3,4,2 She was baptised on 13 August 1814 in St. John the Baptist's Church, Oldcastle, Monmouthshire.2
Eliza married John PASKE, son of Charles PASKE and Esther EDWARDS, on 29 March 1834 in Dingestow, Monmouthshire. She was a Spinster otp of Wonastow. The marriage was witnessed by James & Ann JONES.5,6,7,8,1
In 1835, at the time of the death of their son Charles, Eliza and John lived at Talavan Farm, Dingestow, Monmouthshire.9

Her death was announced in The Illustrated Usk Observer and Raglan Herald, Monmouthshire, on 18 March 1865. It read:
At Werngochen, near Abergavenny, March 7, Eliza, wife of Mr. John Paske, aged 50 years.11


Research Note: Anne Taylor has created a CURZON famiy tree that contains Nathaniel Curzon who died in 1838, the father of Eliza who married John PASKE. Nathaniel's parents were Anne Taylor's 4 x great-grandparents, she can go back to her 7 x great-grandparents.15

Elizabeth PASKE was born in 1836 in Dingestow, Monmouthshire.5,6 She was baptised on 29 September 1836 in Dingestow, Monmouthshire.1,2,7 She was the daughter of John PASKE and Eliza CURZON.1,2
In the census of 7 June 1841 in Wherngochen, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 4, assumed to be the daughter of John PASKE.1
She was baptised, for the second time, on 1 November 1847 in St. Teilo's Church, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire.8
In the census of 30 March 1851 in Werngocher, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 14 born in D?, the daughter of John PASK.9
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 24 born in Llantilio Pertholey, the daughter of John PASKE.10
Elizabeth married John FARR on 30 May 1864 in St. Teilo's Church, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire. She was a Spinster of full age, residing in Werngochen. Her father was listed as John Paske, a Farmer. The marriage was witnessed by John PASKE, and Anne PASKE.11,12
In the census of 2 April 1871 in Killough Farm, Llantillio Crossenny, Monmouthshire, she was listed as a Farmer's wife (visitor), aged 34 born in Dingestow, the sister-in-law of John DAVIES.7
In the census of 3 April 1881 in Crack-o'-hill, Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, she was listed as aged 44 born in Monmouth Monmouthshire, the wife of John FARR (a Farmer of 119 Acres employing 2 Men, living with his wife E., and their children John P., James E. Also listed was two servants.)13
Her husband, John, died on 15 November 1888 in Crack-o'-Hill, Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire.14,15
In the census of 5 April 1891 in Crack-o'-hill, Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, Elizabeth was listed as widowed aged 53 born in Dingestow Monmouthshire, the Head of Household; a Farmer, living with her son John Paske, and her daughter Miriam. Also listed was William P. PRITCHARD, a Visitor, and a Domestic Servant, and a Farm Labourer.6
In the census of 31 March 1901 in Grace Hill, Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, Elizabeth was listed as widowed aged 64 born in Dingestow Monmouthshire, the Head of Household; a Farmer, living with her daughter 'Mariane' and visitor Annie Paske (sister). Also listed were four servants including Harry Gray SIMMS, the Farm Bailiff.16
In the census of 2 April 1911 in Crack-o'-Hill, Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, she was listed as aged 74 born in Dingestow Monmouthshire, a widow with 4 children 3 living 1 dead, the mother-in-law of Harry Gray SIMS.17
Elizabeth died on 20 May 1927 in Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, at the age of 90.18,5

In the census of 7 June 1841 in Wherngochen, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, he was listed as aged 1, assumed to be the son of John PASKE.1
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, he was listed as aged 21, born in Llantilio Pertholey, the son of John PASKE.4
In the census of 2 April 1871 in Lower Llantrothy, Dingestow, Monmouthshire, John was listed as aged 30 born in Llantillio-Pertholey, the Head of Household; a Farmer of 200 acres, unmarried, living with his sister Eliza, and niece Eliza Ann FARR. Also listed were two servants.5

In the census of 30 March 1851 in Werngocher, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 3, born in Llantilio Pertholey, the daughter of John PASK.3
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 12, born in Llantilio Pertholey, the daughter of John PASKE.1 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Lower Llantrothy, Dingestow, Monmouthshire, she was listed as a Housekeeper aged 22 born in Llantillio-Pertholey, the sister of John PASKE.4

     Amos PASKE was born on 1 August 1853 in Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire.1,2,3 He was the son of John PASKE and Eliza CURZON.1
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Wangachen Farm, Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, he was listed as aged 6, born in Llantilio Pertholey, the son of John PASKE.1
Amos married Jane PRICE on 28 October 1878 in Kilpeck, Herefordshire.4,5
Amos and Jane PRICE immigrated to Kansas, USA. They returned to England in c1885.3,6
On 10 October 1886, at the time of the baptism of their children Edith Jane, and John Duncan, Amos and Jane lived at High Street, Woolwich, London. Amos was a Grocer.7,8
In the census of 5 April 1891 in 12 High Street, Woolwich, London, Amos was listed as aged 38 born in Monmouthshire, the Head of Household a Grocer, living with his wife Jane, and children Amos, Albert, John, Annie, Gertrude, and Edith. Also living with them were three boarders.9

A photograph was taken c1900 of Amos and Jane's shop at 12 High Street, Woolwich, London. Amos was in the photograph. A narrative, written by Edith Jean Philpott, accompanying the photograph reads:
"Shop of Amos Paske at North Woolwich. The young men may be (1 to r) one of the Steeds family, Amos Paske and Bert Blower, boy not known.
Amos and Jane Paske went to Kansas, U.S.A. and kept a Store, their Children, Annie, Gertie, Amos and Albert were born there.
They sold up and returned to England, settling at North Woolwich where another daughter, Edie, was born in 1885 and a son John about two years later, their seventh child, Muriel, died in infancy.
Several members of the Paske family and possibly Prices too came as apprentices to Amos. Jane kept open house and large family parties were recalled by her daughter Edie. When Jane died Amos married a sister of Willie and Percy Steeds. Jane had been governess to the family at Shepton Mallet in Somerset."10,11,12

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 168 Elizabeth Street, Woolwich, London, Amos was listed as aged 46 born Llandilo Pertholey Monmouthshire, the Head of Household a Provision Merchant, living with his wife Jane, and children Annie, Gertrude, Amos, Albert, Edith and John. Also living with them was Norah NOLAN, a Servant.6
In the census of 31 March 1901 he was a neighbour of his nephew Thomas Paske BLOWER.13,6
His wife, Jane, died in 1910 in the Woolwich registration district.14
In the census of 2 April 1911 in 32 Wanstead Park Avenue, West Ham, London, Amos was listed as a Widower aged 56 born Llandilo Pertholey, with 6 children all living, the Head of Household; a Retired Provision Merchant, living with his adult children Gertrude A., Edith J., and John D. Also listed was his niece Florence A.15
Amos married Harriett E. STEEDS on 16 August 1911 in St. Mark's Church, St. John's Wood, London. He was a Widower aged 57, a Provision Merchant residing at 32 Wanstead Park Avenue, Wanstead. His father was listed as John PASKE, a Farmer. The marriage was witnessed by A. ? PASKE, and H. J. STEEDS.16,17,5
Prior to his wife's death, Amos and Harriett lived at 32 Wanstead Park Avenue, Manor Park, Essex.18
His wife, Harriett, died on 6 July 1922 in Tyrrell Cottage Hospital, Ilfracombe, Devon.19,18
His wife's, Harriett Emma PASKE, estate was probated to him on 21 July 1922 at London.18
Amos married Laura WILLIAMS in 1924 in Barry, Glamorganshire.5,20
Amos died on 30 November 1946 at the age of 93. At the time, he was living at 40 Wanstead Park Avenue, Manor Park, Essex.21,3,22
His estate was probated to Gertrude Alice FAIRWEATHER and Edith Jane PHILPOTT on 6 June 1947 at London.22
His wife, Laura, died on 4 July 1952 in 40 Wanstead Park Avenue, Manor Park, Essex.23,24

Mary married John PASKE, son of John PASKE and Eliza CURZON, in 1873 in the Abergavenny registration district.3,1
At the time of the baptism of their children Tom Curzon, Allen John, and Edith, they lived at Llantrothy Farm, Dingestow, Monmouthshire.4,5,6
In the census of 3 April 1881 in Llantillio, Monmouthshire, she was listed as aged 30 born in Llanthewy-Skirrid, the wife of John PASKE (a Farmer of 370 acres, living with his wife Mary and children Tom, Edith, Allen, Amos and Annie. Also listed were two servants.)2
In the census of 5 April 1891 in Arkstone Court, Kingstone, Herefordshire, she was listed as aged 40 born in Abergavenny Monmouthshire, the wife of John PASKE (a Farmer, living with his wife Mary, and children Tom C., Edith M., Allan J., Henry R., Annie, Florence, and "Hellen". Also listed was his widowed father-in-law Thomas FARR, and a visitor Annie FARR, and three Farm Servants. Arkstone Court today is a Grade II listed building.)7
In the census of 31 March 1901 in Court Farm, Hampton Bishop, Herefordshire, she was listed as aged 50 born in Monmouthshire, the wife of John PASKE (a Farmer, living with his wife Mary, and children Harry, Annie, Florence, and "Allen". Also listed were two servants.)8
Her husband, John, died on 15 November 1906 in The Court, Hampton Bishop, Herefordshire, at the age of 66.9,10
In the census of 2 April 1911 in The Elms, Hampton Bishop, Herefordshire, Mary was listed as aged 62 born in Llanthewy-Skirrid, the Head of Household; a Widow, a Farmer, living with her daughters Annie, and Helen. Also listed was a visitor, Annie HOPKINS, and a General Servant Thomas TAYSOM.11

     Amos C. PASKE was born in 1883 in Kansas, USA.2 He was the son of Amos PASKE and Jane PRICE.3,2
In the census of 5 April 1891 in 12 High Street, Woolwich, London, he was listed as aged 9 born in Kansas USA, the son of Amos PASKE.4
Amos was in a photograph of his father's shop. A narrative, written by Edith Jean Philpott, accompanying the photograph reads:
"Shop of Amos Paske at North Woolwich. The young men may be (1 to r) one of the Steeds family, Amos Paske and Bert Blower, boy not known.
Amos and Jane Paske went to Kansas, U.S.A. and kept a Store, their Children, Annie, Gertie, Amos and Albert were born there.
They sold up and returned to England, settling at North Woolwich where another daughter, Edie, was born in 1885 and a son John about two years later, their seventh child, Muriel, died in infancy.
Several members of the Paske family and possibly Prices too came as apprentices to Amos. Jane kept open house and large family parties were recalled by her daughter Edie. When Jane died Amos married a sister of Willie and Percy Steeds. Jane had been governess to the family at Shepton Mallet in Somerset."5,6,7

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 168 Elizabeth Street, Woolwich, London, he was listed as a Grocer's Apprentice aged 18 born in Kansas USA, the son of Amos PASKE.2
Amos married Agnes FLETT, daughter of William FLETT and Jane FLETT, in 1910 in the West Ham registration district.8
He witnessed the marriage of Harriett E. STEEDS and his father Amos PASKE on 16 August 1911 in St. Mark's Church, St. John's Wood, London.9,10,11
Agnes died on 20 March 1921 in 168 Elizabeth Street, Woolwich, London.12,13
His wife's, Agnes PASKE, estate was probated to him on 25 April 1921 at London.14 Amos married Minnie FLETT, his deceased wife's sister, daughter of William FLETT and Jane FLETT, in 1927 in the West Ham registration district.15,16
Amos died in 1933 in the West Ham registration district.17
His wife, Minnie, died on 9 February 1972 in the Epping registration district.18,19

Amos married Daphne I. BRISTOW on 18 June 1938 in Manor Park, London.6,7
At the time of their daughter Elizabeth's wedding in 1962, Amos and Daphne lived with their adult children at Regal Lodge, Kentford, Newmarket, Suffolk.8
At the time of his death, Amos lived at South Lodge, Gazeley Road, Kentford, Suffolk.9
Amos died on 26 June 1994 in Kentford, Suffolk, at the age of 79.2,9 His body was cremated on 1 July 1994 in Cambridge Crematorium, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.10

Geoffrey married Minnie BLAND in 1941 in the Essex South West registration district.5
On 14 September 1947, at the time of the baptism of their daughter Susan Mary PASKE, Geoffrey and Minnie lived in 9 Sprowston Road, Forest Gate, London. Geoffrey was a Bank Clerk.6
Geoffrey's death was registered in October 1990 in the Chichester registration district at the age of 77.3

     Leslie Robert PASKE M.B.E, JP was born on 4 December 1916 in Woolwich, London.1,2,3 He was the son of Amos Curzon PASKE and Agnes FLETT.1,4

His forecoming marriage was announced in the Hull Daily Mail, Hull, Yorkshire, on 5 June 1946.5 It read:
FORTHCOMING MARRIAGES
The wedding arranged between Joan, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Botham, and Leslie, youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs A. C. Paske, will take place at St. Mary's Church, Elloughton, on Saturday, June 8th, at 11 o'clock. All friends welcome at the church.5

Leslie married Joan BOTHAM on 8 June 1946 at St. Mary's Church, Elloughton, Yorkshire.6,5

The family lived at Parkfield, Littlethorpe Road, Ripon, Yorkshire, Leslie was a Paint Technologist.7

Joan & Leslie, and their three young children immigrated. They travelled on RMS Rangitane, departing from London on 3 September 1954, travelling to Wellington, New Zealand.8,7

His wife, Joan, died on 10 June 2003 in Wellington, New Zealand, at the age of 78.10,11

Les was in a photograph taken in 2006, shortly before he died, looking over Wellington, New Zealand, the city he served for so many years.12
